Janet Iwasa received her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco working on actin cytoskeleton dynamics with Dyche Mullins. After a postdoctoral fellowship focusing on visualizing the origins of life with Jack Szostak at Massachusetts General Hospital, she joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School in 2008.
