John Flanagan received his PhD at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge, England, in 1984, and his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, England, in 1980. After arriving at Harvard Medical School in 1986 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Genetics, he was named an Assistant Professor in 1991, joining the Department of Cell Biology, and becoming a member of the Program in Neuroscience in 1997. He was appointed a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School in 2001.
